Police Explorer Program

The Shafter Police Explorer Program is essentially an apprenticeship program for preparation and introduction into law enforcement as a career. Police explorers are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in high school or college (for all courses taken), and at least six semester college courses per semester if they have already graduated and are working part time (12 units if they are graduated as full-time students).

Explorer Events & Activities
The program coordinator works with a program officer and any other program advisors who are selected in order to provide a mentor for each explorer. There is a scheduled training calendar in which officers from the department host training in law enforcement subject matter, mirroring many of the topics learned in the police academy.

Aside from learning the law, explorers will also be exposed to learning how to take a written exam, oral interview, physical agility course, and how to prepare for background investigations. They will also be taken on field trips to various agencies for exposure to all elements of law enforcement. It truly is a career preparation program.

Additional Participation Requirements
Explorers also receive uniforms, but not at the outset as this privilege is earned through demonstrated hard work and commitment. They will participate in ride-alongs after they are assessed and cleared by the program coordinator. Additionally, police explorers are expected to participate in monthly meetings and training as well as be expected to help at our special events in various roles such as the Shafter Fireworks Show, Cinco de Mayo Parade, football games, and other events.

Police explorers will also have special fun activities as a group along the way such as paintball events, amusement parks, backpacking and camping, physical fitness functions, and other activities.

The Shafter Police Department is currently recruiting and testing for the position of police explorer. The primary general requirements are:
  • Applicants must be 14 1/2 to 20 years of age
  • Applicants must have a general interest and appreciation for law enforcement
  • Applicants must have and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. when school is in session
  • Applicants must not use alcohol or drugs
  • Applicants must be of good moral character
  • Applicants must not have any felony convictions
  • If the applicant is under the age of 18, they must have parental consent and support
