Office of Traffic Safety

Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant

The Shafter Police Department is pleased to have received a second grant award from the California State Office of Traffic Safety. The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant (STEP) provides our Department with a full-time traffic enforcement officer who is dedicated to grant enforcement tasks specifically focused on reducing persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, reducing hit and run collisions, nighttime collisions and intersection collisions. The Traffic Enforcement Officer (TEO) will accomplish this task through various enforcement measures and educational opportunities.

STEP Statistics
We have current statistics showing the activity of the Traffic Enforcement Officer (TEO) over the last month. We are still gathering data to show overall activity for the last quarter (October through December) and will have it up soon.

Our hope is that you, the community, will find the reports helpful and informative. If you have any questions, please contact the Operations Captain.

STEP Portable Light Tower ...Seen any bright lights lately?

Well, it's probably our Office of Traffic Safety portable Light Tower. This light tower is towed by a police department vehicle to wherever our DUI/Driver's License checkpoint or other operational locations to help provide a well lit environment.

In April our agency attended an OTS Conference in Anaheim and we really brought back a lot of information of what other agency's and State's are doing. I was really impressed by the Office of Traffic Safety in Washington State. They had some great informative slides I was able to obtain to share with you. Although these are Washington State specific, I think they're pretty close to sending the same message here in our great State.

The slide below shows a historical perspective of traffic death rates in the U.S. and Washington over a broad period of time.

Historical Death Rates History.JPG
The graph below outlines contributing circumstances in fatal accidents and the outcome of those wearing seatbelts and those who were not. I'm sure Cell Phones will be in their own category soon!

A breakdown by vehicle deaths related to type of roadways. Note the "County Roads" were the majority...think we may have a few around here?
Death Rate By Road Type.JPG
Ever wonder about the most dangerous age? Well, here's what Washington's was and I'm sure ours isn't much different. As a note, I know that the rate would be lower for the senior citizens and that this graph would have been better compared to number of licensed drivers in the same age category. But I think the point is obvious.

Ever wonder which days may be the most dangerous? Well, it should come as no surprise that the weekends can be the worst.

Last slide I'll share is a rather compelling demonstration of why seatbelt use is so important in case you missed the first slide on that. PLEASE BUCKLE UP.

My sincere thanks to the Washington State Office of Traffic Safety for providing these slides to share with our community. To see more info from their site, please go to: http://www.wtsc.wa.gov/

 Drinking and Driving Campaign

Many other States and Countries experience the same issues California does with drunk driving. TAC, the Transport Accident Commission in Victoria, Australia, has launched a five minute retrospective video looking back over twenty years of road safety television commercials. The videos are some of the best we've seen and we want to bring it to you for your consideration. Share it with your loved ones in order to communicate the tragedy that often results from drinking and driving.

We warn you that much of the video presentation may not be suitable for everyone but we'd also encourage you to see it - for drinking and driving has horrific consequences.
