Am I required to recycle?
AB 341, passed by Governor Brown on October 6, 2011 and effective July 1, 2012, requires all businesses and public entities that generate four cubic yards or more of waste per week, as well as multifamily housing with five or more units to recycle.
To know if you generate 4 cubic yards per week, determine if you would fill a 5' by 6' dumpster or use more than twenty-five 30 Gallon trash bags. If so the State of California requires you to recycle!
How do I recycle?
Shafter multi-family complexes, businesses and industries with existing City refuse collection service that meet the criteria for recycling required by the State are advised to contact Public Works Director Michael James to arrange a recycling service assessment and discuss service options.
Shafter mulit-family complexes, businesses and industries with private refuse collections service that meet the criteria for recycling required by the State are advised to schedule a recycling service assessment directly with their current provider.
Please note the City is required by the State to monitor and report on any and all commercial recycling on an annual basis. Therefore, our staff may need to arrange routine site visits to monitor service and track progress with diversion programs.
